Additional information

Smyrna held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — multiple times, and the "Γ ΝΕΩΚ" in this coin's legend proudly advertises its third such grant. The city competed fiercely with Ephesus and Pergamon for these honors, which carried real commercial and political weight in the conventus hierarchy. Sexstus, named in the magistrate legend, served as the issuing authority during Gallienus's sole reign following the capture of his father Valerian by Shapur I in 260 — a catastrophe that left the western and eastern provinces simultaneously fracturing.
