Additional information

Abila's civic coinage under Elagabalus belongs to a brief window when the Decapolis city was still producing autonomous-style bronzes under the broader provincial umbrella of Arabia. Elagabalus himself was elevated to emperor at fourteen by the Third Gallienica Legion at Raphana — a garrison town not far from Abila — making the regional loyalty embedded in these issues something more than formulaic.
