Obverse description Laureate head of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered in the characteristic imperial portrait style of the early second century AD. The effigy displays strong facial features with the laureate wreath clearly visible atop the head. A Greek imperial legend encircles the bust, reading partially around the upper and lateral fields of the flan. The strike is somewhat uneven, consistent with provincial hammered coinage of Bithynia.

Additional information

Iuliopolis occupied a strategically awkward position in inland Bithynia, originally a Galatian settlement called Gordoucome before Augustus reorganized provincial boundaries and the city was absorbed into Bithynia et Pontus. Its civic coinage under Trajan is sparse — the city never achieved the output or prestige of Nicomedia or Nicaea — and bronze issues attributable to this mint are encountered infrequently enough that die studies remain incomplete.
