| Reverse description | Two Tychai of the colony standing facing one another and clasping right hands in a dextrarum iunctio gesture, symbolizing civic union or alliance. To the left stands a statue upon a column, while between the two figures a lighted altar rises in the center field. Above, an eagle perches upon a palm branch, a common honorific symbol in provincial coinage. To the right, the centaur Sagittarius is depicted drawing a bow, serving as an astrological emblem of the colony. In the exergue, a river god identified as the Chaboras (modern Khabur) is shown swimming, with the surrounding Greek legend ϹΕΠ ΚΟΛ ΡΗϹΑΙΝΗϹΙωΝ L III P denoting the Septimian colony of Rhesaena in its third year of a Phoenician era reckoning. |
