| Reverse description | Leander depicted swimming rightward across the waters toward a tower at left, atop which Hero stands holding an illuminated lamp to guide him. The mythological scene, closely associated with the city of Abydus on the Hellespont, is rendered in the narrative style characteristic of provincial bronze coinage of Asia Minor. The reverse legend is distributed across the field, naming Leander and identifying the issuing civic community of the Abydenians. |
