Obverse description Draped bust of the personified Roman Senate (ϹΥΝΚΛΗΤΟϹ) facing right, depicted with idealized features and wearing a diadem or wreath, the drapery rendered in flowing folds across the shoulder. The circumferential Greek legend ΙΕΡΑ ϹΥΝΚΛΗΤΟϹ ('Sacred Senate') runs around the bust. This unusual obverse type, honoring the Senate rather than the reigning emperor, reflects the civic autonomy and senatorial loyalty expressed on provincial bronze coinage of Smyrna during the reign of Gordian III.
