| Additional information |
Cius, the Bithynian port city on the Propontis, was refounded and renamed Prusias ad Mare by the Bithynian king Prusias I around 202 BC — yet civic coinage from the imperial period stubbornly retained the old ethnic ΚΙΑΝΩΝ, a quiet assertion of local identity that Rome had no particular reason to suppress. Provincial bronze of this type circulated almost exclusively within the immediate region, functioning as small-denomination civic currency while the imperial silver handled longer-distance trade.
Caracalla's long co-reign with Septimius Severus beginning in 198 AD accounts for the broad date range assigned to this issue.
