| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Vespasian facing right, depicted with characteristic short hair and strong facial features typical of Flavian portraiture. The Greek imperial legend surrounds the effigy along the periphery of the flan, partially visible due to the irregular planchet. The portrait is rendered in the Romano-Egyptian provincial style, showing the emperor's neck and truncation at the base. |

| Additional information |
Year 1 of Vespasian's reign — 69 AD — was also the final year of the civil war that produced four emperors in rapid succession. Vespasian was still in the east commanding the Judaean campaign when his legions proclaimed him emperor, and Alexandria was the first major city to formally declare for him, on July 1st. The mint there was striking in his name before Rome itself had settled the question of who would rule it.
