| Reverse description | A cista mystica (ritual basket) draped with a panther skin, surmounted by a cornucopia, rendered in relief at the centre of the flan. The cista is shown as a cylindrical wicker basket, a standard Dionysiac emblem widely employed on Bithynian provincial coinage. The Greek legend of the proconsul Marcus Salvidenus Asprenas encircles the design, and the abbreviated civic ethnic NEI-KAI (for Nicaea) together with the letters ΠΡ ΒΙ appear in the field. The overall composition is typical of the Flavian-era civic bronze issues of Nicaea under Roman provincial administration. |
