He holds a knotted serpent-entwined staff (the caduceus of Asclepius) in his left hand, the serpent coiling prominently around the shaft. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea in the genitive plural, appears in the field. The overall composition is characteristic of civic bronze reverses from Bithynia under the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus. |
