Reverse description Sarapis enthroned left upon a high-backed throne, his right hand extended and his left hand grasping a tall sceptre; the syncretic deity wears the characteristic modius (kalathos) upon his head. At his feet to the left crouches Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld, rendered in characteristic provincial style. The encircling Greek legend names the local strategos responsible for the issue, set within a beaded border.

Additional information

Colophon's civic bronze issues under the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus belong to a period when provincial mints across Asia Minor were effectively filling a vacuum left by increasingly debased imperial silver. The magistrate named in the legend — whose title ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡ identifies him as a strategus — was one of the last local officials to authorize autonomous civic coinage from Colophon before the city's minting activity ceased entirely, likely disrupted by the Gothic raids that devastated the Aegean coast in the 260s.
