| Obverse description | Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Emperor Trajan Decius facing left, the radiate crown rendered with pronounced spikes. The emperor is depicted with a short beard, characteristic of his portraiture. A Greek imperial legend encircles the effigy along the border, reading from left to right around the periphery of the flan. The style is typical of provincial Mesopotamian workshop production of the mid-third century AD, with bold if somewhat coarse relief. |

| Additional information |
Rhesaena, a garrison town on the Khabur River in northern Mesopotamia, struck civic bronzes only during a narrow window of the 3rd century. Its issues under Trajan Decius are among the final coins attributable to the city's mint — the municipal coinage tradition there effectively ceased around the time of his death at the Battle of Abritus in 251, when Gothic incursions destabilized the eastern frontier supply lines that gave such provincial centers their administrative coherence.
BMC Greek 30 is one of the rarer Rhesaena attributions in major collections.
