Reverse description Depiction of the celebrated sanctuary of Aphrodite at Paphos (Cyprus), shown in elevation as a columned temple facade housing the sacred conical xoanon (aniconic cult image) of the goddess, above which appear a star and crescent. Flanking the temple are a flaming torch and a column to left and right respectively. In the foreground, a paved semi-circular walled temenos courtyard is rendered in perspective, conveying the monumental character of the Paphian precinct. The reverse legend identifies the type as a civic issue of Sardis honouring the Paphian Aphrodite.
