Additional information

Smyrna held the title of neokoros — official keeper of an imperial cult temple — three times by the reign of Gordian III, a distinction fiercely competed for among the great cities of Asia Minor. The "Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ" designation on this issue was not ceremonial shorthand but a direct political assertion, advertised on civic bronze precisely because the rank determined prestige, tax privileges, and standing in the provincial assembly. Smyrna had fought Ephesus and Pergamon for such honors across generations of Roman governance.
