Additional information

Cyzicus held the rare distinction of being one of the few Asian Greek cities to retain meaningful civic coinage rights well into the third century, a privilege that hinged on its status as the administrative center of its conventus and its long history of loyalty to Rome. Issues under Gallienus's sole reign — after Valerian's capture by Shapur I at Edessa in 260 — reflect a city still functioning with institutional confidence even as the empire fractured around it. The neokorate title embedded in the legend marks Cyzicus as a twice-honored imperial cult center.
