Year 42 of Augustus's reign as reckoned by the Alexandrian calendar — LΜΑ marking regnal year 42 — this bronze was struck under Roman provincial administration at a mint that had operated continuously since the Ptolemaic period. Alexandria maintained its own dating system and bronze coinage well into the imperial period, functioning as a closed currency zone: Roman silver did not officially circulate in Egypt, and Alexandrian bronze did not leave it. The province was administered directly by a prefect answerable only to the emperor, bypassing the Senate entirely.
