| Reverse description | Nude, bearded Heracles standing to the right, his right hand resting on his hip in a relaxed contrapposto pose, while his left arm leans upon his club, which is draped with the Nemean lion's skin. The figure reflects the Spartan civic pride in Heracles as a mythological ancestor of the Heraclid kings. The reverse legend ΛΑΚΕΔΑΙΜΟΝΙωΝ (of the Lacedaemonians) identifies the issuing city. The style is characteristic of provincial bronze coinage struck at Sparta under the Antonine dynasty. |
