Reverse description Distyle temple facade enclosing two cult statues: at left, Artemis standing right, drawing an arrow from a quiver at her shoulder and holding a bow; at right, the nude figure of Marnas standing left. Between the two statues, the Gaza civic symbol (the mem device) appears in the field. The composition reflects the syncretic religious character of Hellenistic-era Gaza.

Additional information

Gaza maintained the right to strike civic bronze throughout the Antonine period under a municipal dating system tied to the Gazan era, which began in 61 BC following Pompey's reorganization of the eastern provinces. The ΖϹ in the coin's designation reflects that local era reckoning rather than regnal or Common Era dating — a practice that distinguished Gaza's civic issues from the provincial Syro-Phoenician series struck under Roman imperial authority.

Gaza's mint was among the more active in the southern Levant during the second century, supplying small-denomination bronze for a port city that moved significant Mediterranean trade traffic.
