| Obverse description | Youthful bare-headed bust of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, draped in cuirass and paludamentum, facing right. The portrait reflects the conventional representation of Aurelius in his early years as heir to Antoninus Pius. The circular legend surrounding the effigy reads Μ ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟϹ ΟΥΗΡΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ in Greek characters, identifying the future emperor by his pre-adoption name. The workmanship is consistent with provincial civic coinage of Thrace during the Antonine period. |

| Reverse description | Sarapis enthroned, seated left upon a high-backed throne, his right arm extended outward above Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld, who sits at his feet to the left. In his left hand Sarapis holds a tall sceptre. The syncretic deity is depicted wearing a modius (kalathos) upon his head, consistent with his Alexandrian iconographic tradition. The ethnic legend ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ is inscribed around the field, identifying the issuing civic authority of Hadrianopolis in Thrace. |
