Reverse description Cybele, the Great Mother goddess, seated left upon a high-backed throne, her right hand extended forward holding a patera in offering, her left arm resting upon a tympanum set beside her. A lion, the sacred attribute of Cybele, is depicted at her feet facing left, rendered in the typical provincial style of Bithynian civic bronzes. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea. The composition reflects the strong local veneration of Cybele in the cities of Bithynia during the third century AD.
