Additional information

Cyzicus held the rare distinction of being granted neokoros status — the right to maintain an imperial cult temple — multiple times over, and the "B NEOKOP" designation on this issue signals its second such grant. The city lobbied aggressively for these honors, which brought prestige, pilgrims, and revenue. Valerian and Gallienus co-ruled as Augustus and Augustus simultaneously, an unusual arrangement that provincial mints across Asia Minor acknowledged by issuing coins in both names, sometimes as joint types like this one. The strategos Apollonides named in the obverse legend was a local magistrate whose term of office provides the closest dating anchor available for Kyzikene bronzes of this period.
