The Magnetes of Thessaly — a loose ethnic federation centered around the Pagasetic Gulf — struck provincial bronzes for Nero likely in response to his celebrated tour of Greece in 66–67 AD, during which he competed in games, freed the province from taxation, and accepted divine honors with apparent sincerity. Whether this coin predates or follows that tour is unresolved, but the honorific ϹΕΒΑϹΤΟϹ framing reflects the kind of enthusiastic local flattery the emperor actively encouraged.
