| Obverse description | Confronted busts of Nero and Poppaea face-to-face in the field: the bare head of Nero faces right on the left side, while the draped bust of Poppaea faces left on the right side, the two effigies placed vis-à-vis in a distinctive double-portrait arrangement characteristic of provincial civic coinage. A continuous Greek legend surrounds the jugate portraits within a dotted border, naming both imperial figures as Augusti. The portraiture displays the characteristic provincial die-cutting style of the Sardis conventus, with bold, if somewhat summary, modeling of the facial features. |
