| Reverse description | The celebrated chryselephantine cult statue of Zeus by Pheidias depicted seated left upon an ornate, high-backed throne; the god holds a small figure of Nike (Victory) in his extended right hand and rests his left hand upon a long sceptre. The composition faithfully reproduces the iconography of the famous cult image housed in the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, a recurring type on Elean provincial coinage. The ethnic legend ΗΛΕΙωΝ appears in the field. |
