Obverse description Laureate bust of Gordian III facing left, depicted in heroic military guise bearing a spear resting on the right shoulder and a shield against the left shoulder. The shield's surface is decorated with an embossed scene of the emperor in a biga, spearing a fallen enemy and being crowned by Nike. The portrait is rendered in the provincial style characteristic of the Lydian conventus, with bold, slightly stylised facial features. The obverse legend encircles the bust in Greek capitals.
