Obverse description Bare, diademed head of the Roman Senate personified, facing right, rendered in the conventional portrait style employed by Aphrodisian civic coinage of the Gordian III period. The facial features are broadly modelled, with the diadem clearly distinguishable across the brow. The Greek legend ΙΕΡΑ ϹΥΝΚΛΗΤΟϹ ('Sacred Senate') runs around the periphery of the flan, serving as the identifying inscription for this personification. The flan is irregularly shaped and the surfaces exhibit heavy patination consistent with the provincial bronze coinage of Caria.
