| Reverse description | Pan, the pastoral deity, depicted standing to the left in full figure, nude save for a chlamys or animal skin, holding a syrinx (pan-pipes) in one hand and a pedum (shepherd's crook) in the other. The figure is rendered in the provincial Greek style characteristic of Pamphylian civic issues of the 3rd century AD. The ethnic legend ΑϹΠΕΝΔΙΩΝ encircles the field, identifying this as a civic issue of Aspendus. The coin's reverse reflects the strong local religious and cultural associations of Aspendus with Pan as a civic deity. |
