Additional information

Epidaurus was the principal sanctuary site of Asklepios in the Greek world, and coins issued there under Antoninus Pius drew directly on that identity — the city's mint output during this reign was closely tied to festival and pilgrimage activity at the Asklepieion rather than everyday commerce. The sanctuary attracted suppliants from across the Mediterranean, and locally struck bronze would have changed hands among votaries, traders, and the sanctuary's own administration.

The BMC reference for Epidauran bronzes of this period notes extremely low survivor populations, consistent with limited original production runs.
