Pompeiopolis in Cilicia was founded by Pompey the Great following his decisive campaign against the pirates of the eastern Mediterranean in 67 BC, and the city retained his name — and a fierce civic pride in that connection — well into the imperial period. The year ϘϚ (96) in the local Pompeiopoitan era places this issue precisely in 30–31 AD, during the closing years of Tiberius's reign when Cilicia was administered without a full senatorial governor, falling under a patchwork of client-king arrangements and direct equestrian oversight.
