| Reverse description | Tyche of the City, the tutelary deity of Carrhae, seated left upon a rocky outcrop, holding stalks of grain (corn ears) in her outstretched hand, symbolising the city's prosperity and fertility. A lighted altar is depicted at her feet before her. In the exergue, a river god swims leftward, personifying the local watercourse and a common motif on Mesopotamian provincial coinage. The reverse legend in Greek encircling the field proclaims the civic status of Carrhae as both metropolis and Roman colony. The composition reflects the standard iconographic programme of eastern provincial civic bronzes of the Severan era. |
