The left Nemesis holds a bridle, symbol of restraint and retribution, while the right Nemesis holds a cubit rule or measuring rod, symbolizing justice and proportion. Between their feet lies a wheel, an additional attribute of Nemesis representing the turning of fate. The composition reflects the double Nemesis cult that was particularly venerated at Smyrna. The encircling legend ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ proclaims the city's triple neocorate status. |
