| Reverse description | Athena, the tutelary deity of Sardis, stands facing left in a dignified contrapposto pose, her right hand extending an olive branch as a symbol of civic prosperity, her left hand gripping a spear held upright. Her shield rests at her feet to the lower left, and the composition reflects the Hellenistic artistic tradition maintained in provincial civic coinage of Asia Minor. The encircling legend proclaims Sardis's honour as a twice-neocorate city, emphasising the city's prestigious religious status within the Roman province of Lydia. |
