Pescennius Niger's coinage is among the rarest of the civil war issues of 193 AD — the Year of the Five Emperors — because his control of the eastern provinces lasted barely eighteen months before Septimius Severus defeated him at the Battle of Issus in the spring of 194. Caesarea Germanica, a small Bithynian city with limited mint output under the best circumstances, struck for a claimant who was already losing ground militarily by the time many of these bronzes entered circulation.
