Reverse description Turreted Tyche seated left upon a throne, holding a small model of a temple in each hand, referencing the city's twice-granted neocorate status. The figure is rendered in the standard civic personification style common to Bithynian provincial coinage. The two temple models allude directly to the two imperial cult temples at Nicomedia that earned the city its double neocorate honour. The reverse legend encircles the enthroned figure in the field.

Additional information

Nicomedia's title ΔΙΣΝΕΩΚΟΡΟΣ — "twice temple-warden" — reflects the city's accumulated imperial cult honors, the second neokoria having been granted under Severus Alexander. Maximinus Thrax, who seized power in 235 after the murder of Severus Alexander, never once visited Rome during his reign, let alone the eastern provinces. Coins issued in his name by cities like Nicomedia were acts of political alignment by local elites hedging against a volatile new regime.
