Syros, a small Cycladic island with no imperial mint and negligible political weight, produced civic bronzes in remarkably small quantities during the Antonine period. The retrograde legend ϹΥΡΙωΝ — the ethnic of the island's inhabitants written right-to-left — almost certainly reflects a local die-cutter working without formal training in epigraphy, a situation endemic to minor island mints where oversight from provincial authorities was minimal at best.
The reference IV.2#5278 places this within the RPC (Roman Provincial Coinage) Online corpus, where Syros issues from Marcus Aurelius's co-rule with Commodus remain among the least-documented civic bronzes of the Aegean.
