Reverse description A flaming altar supporting a tall lighted torch, around which a serpent coils upward; the altar is surmounted by a poppy head and adorned with ears of grain on its sides. This imagery evokes the mystery cult associations of Cyzicus, particularly those connected with Demeter and Persephone, for whom the torch, serpent, poppy, and grain are canonical sacred symbols. The ethnic legend ΚΥΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ is inscribed around the reverse field.
