| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius facing right, with a distinctive long beard rendered in tightly wound curls characteristic of his mature portraiture. The effigy displays the emperor's thick, voluminous hair and full curled beard, executed in the high-relief sculptural style typical of Antonine-period provincial coinage. The Greek imperial titulature legend reads partially around the periphery of the flan. A dotted border frames the design. |

Cyzicus struck heavily for the Antonine dynasty, and issues for Marcus Aurelius cluster around the years of the Marcomannic Wars — a grinding conflict on the Danubian frontier that stretched imperial finances and drew the emperor away from Rome for extended campaigns beginning in 169. Provincial bronzes like this one circulated locally in the conventus, well outside the reach of Rome's monetary policy, minted under civic authority with no central oversight over output volumes.
