Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, viewed from the front, with the radiate crown rendered in bold spikes above the youthful imperial effigy. The drapery and cuirass are indicated at the truncation. A circular Greek legend surrounds the bust, reading Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ΑΥΓ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature as Marcus Antonius Gordianus Augustus. The portrait reflects the characteristic provincial die-cutting style of Bithynian civic coinage of the mid-third century AD.
