| Obverse description | Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of the emperor Gordian III facing right, rendered in three-quarter view from the front, with paludamentum visible over the left shoulder. The imperial effigy is portrayed in the provincial style characteristic of Pontic civic coinage, with a youthful profile. The circumferential Greek legend runs clockwise around the bust within a plain border. |

| Reverse description | Dionysus, the god of wine and festivity, stands facing left in full figure at the centre of the field, rendered in a classical contrapposto stance. In his outstretched right hand he holds a cantharus, the characteristic deep wine cup, while his left hand grasps a long thyrsus, the fennel-topped staff sacred to his cult. The deity is partially draped, with a feline skin or himation falling over the lower body. The Greek civic legend is disposed in two lines around the figure, identifying the issuing city of Heraclea Pontica. |
