The left and right standards are each surmounted by a capricorn, the dynastic symbol associated with the Severan dynasty, while the central standard bears a wreath at its apex. The reverse legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ (of the Nicaeans) identifies the issuing civic authority of Nicaea in Bithynia. The design reflects the strong military associations promoted under Elagabalus's reign and the civic pride of the Nicaean mint. |
