Tyra, a Greek colony at the mouth of the Tyras River (modern Dniester), issued provincial bronzes under Domitian that are poorly represented in major collections — the city's archaeological record was largely disrupted by successive Sarmatian incursions during the first and second centuries. The exergual placement of ΤΥΡΑ is characteristic of this mint's output and helps distinguish these pieces from the broader Pontic regional coinage with which they are sometimes confused.
