Pompeiopolis was founded by Pompey the Great following his decisive campaign against the Cilician pirates in 67 BC, and the city retained dynastic pride in that founding well into the imperial period. The magistrate abbreviations preserved in the field inscription — ΘΜΡ ΠΡ ΑΛΚ — identify this as a civic issue tied to a named local official, a naming convention that gives Cilician provincial bronzes unusual prosopographical value for reconstructing regional administrative hierarchies under the Flavians.
