Additional information

Cotiaeum, a mid-tier Phrygian city in the Synnada conventus, issued coins jointly in the names of Valerian and Gallienus during their co-reign — a pairing that itself reflects the administrative strain of the Crisis of the Third Century, when the empire was fragmenting fast enough that co-emperorship had become a practical necessity rather than an honorific gesture. The magistrate named in the legend, Demetrianos, served as hipparchos, a cavalry-linked civic office that by this period was largely ceremonial but still carried enough prestige to warrant mint credit.
