Reverse description Artemis, goddess of the hunt, depicted in a short chiton advancing to the right with dynamic stride. She holds a long torch gripped with both hands, a distinctive iconographic attribute associated with the cult of Artemis as practiced in Boeotia. The figure is rendered in the compact, somewhat linear style characteristic of provincial Greek civic bronze coinage of the early second century AD. The ethnic legend of the Tanagreans is inscribed around the reverse field. A dotted border frames the composition.

Additional information

Tanagra's civic bronze issues under Trajan are among the more obscure provincial productions of the period — the city in Boeotia had long since passed its classical peak, best remembered for the terracotta figurines that flooded the antiquities market in the 1870s following clandestine excavations of its necropolis. Roman-era Tanagra struck only sporadically, and the series attributed to the Trajanic period remains poorly documented, with III#412 representing one of the few catalogued anchor points for the type.
