Augusta in Cilicia was a minor city whose civic coinage under Nero is poorly documented and survives in small numbers. This issue dates to 67–68 AD, the final year of Nero's reign — he was dead by June 68, forced to suicide as Galba's revolt collapsed his support in Rome and the Praetorian Guard abandoned him.
The city's name, ΑΥΓΟΥΣΤΑΝΩΝ, reflects its foundation or refoundation under Augustan patronage, a common honorific that dozens of eastern cities adopted to curry imperial favor.
