| Reverse description | Demeter, the goddess of grain and harvest, depicted standing in full figure facing left, her garments rendered in flowing drapery. In her right hand she holds ears of corn, and in her left a long torch, both attributes emblematic of her divine role. The circular Greek legend ΝΙΚΟΜΗΔΕΩΝ ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ — proclaiming the city of Nicomedia's twice-awarded neocorate honour — runs around the periphery of the field. The type reflects the civic pride of Nicomedia as a leading centre of the imperial cult in Bithynia. |
