Reverse description A Roman colonist strides rightward, guiding a yoke of oxen as he ploughs the sacred boundary (pomerium) of the colony, his right hand raised in a gesture of command or benediction. This scene is the canonical colonial foundation type employed on Roman provincial coinage to assert the city's status as a colonia. The composition fills the central field, with the abbreviated colonial legend disposed around the periphery. A dotted border is visible along the upper rim of the flan.
