Additional information

Hypaepa was a minor Lydian city whose civic coinage depended almost entirely on the tenure of individual Roman officials — the magistrate name partially preserved in the legend here anchored the issue legally and gave the city its brief window to mint. Commodus granted provinces and allied cities unusual latitude in bronze production during his early reign, before court politics consumed his administration. Most Hypaepan issues of this period survive in small numbers; the city lacked the economic weight of nearby Sardis or Ephesus to produce large runs.
