Additional information

Maicius Rufus served as proconsul of Bithynia-Pontus under Vespasian, and his name appears on a small cluster of provincial bronzes that together form one of the more precisely datable groups within the Bithynian koinon series. The practice of naming the sitting proconsul on provincial issues was not universal across the eastern provinces — Bithynia-Pontus used it selectively, which makes these coins unusually useful for reconstructing the sequence of governors during the Flavian period.
