Additional information

Nicomedia held the title of "twice neokoros" — the honorific recorded in this coin's legend — having twice been granted the right to maintain an imperial cult temple, a status fiercely contested among rival Bithynian cities and awarded directly by the Roman Senate. The city lobbied aggressively for each grant, and the double distinction was a source of civic pride substantial enough to advertise on bronze coinage for decades.

Under Severus Alexander, Nicomedia remained one of the most administratively significant cities in the eastern provinces, serving as a regional hub long before Diocletian later made it an imperial capital.
